Garden News

Potato Chitting

On Tuesday 4th March, Whittington were “chitting” our potatoes in a national competition to grow the largest amount of potatoes.  There are 8000 schools taking part so we have a lot of competition!  We will update you on our progress!

Sunflower Competition

We shall soon be holding a sponsored sunflower-growing competition for the charity called “Feed the Children”.  Children will be given seeds to bring home and plant, with a sponsor form to obtain sponsorship for each cm that the sunflower grows.  There will be a prize for the tallest sunflower and for the most sponsorship money raised.  The sponsorship money will buy seeds and tools to enable people in Africa to have enough food to eat and also to provide clean drinking water.

Toys

Please encourage your child not to bring toys to school.  Unfortunately we are having too many disputes at break times and some treasured toys have been lost.

Head Lice

Please check and treat your child’s hair regularly because we have confirmed cases of “little, unwanted visitors” in school at the moment!

Tokens

Please keep sending your tokens into school.  We need all Tesco sport vouchers and Nestlé cereal tokens before Easter so that we can bank them before the deadline.

We shall be collecting Flora margarine tokens for free cooking equipment for school.  These will be available from June to October, so please send these into school if you buy Flora and ask friends and family to collect for us.

Many thanks.

SPORTS RELIEF

March 14th 2008

Come as your favourite sports personality or in your favourite sports gear (please remember we will be going outside for breaks).

We are asking children for a 50 p donation for Sports Relief Charities.

Children will experience a sport activity during the day.

SPORTS WEEK

June 30th—July 4th

We shall be fully active in the government’s National Sport Week on the above dates.  We have bowling, fencing and rugby organised so far and would very much welcome any further sports which anyone can offer to us during this week (traditional sports or new ones.) Please contact the school office: Tel: 432487.

Feedback from Parents Evening

Thank you to parents who made suggestions or comments in our suggestion box at parents’ evenings.

A few parents commented that they did not feel that the hall was an easy place to have confidential conversations with staff. In future we will make sure that parents’ evenings take place in classrooms.

A concern was expressed about dogs being tied up to the school gates or fence when children are brought or collected from school.  Could we ask parents not to do this, nor to bring dogs on school property as some children are anxious about walking past them.

Another comment requested more staff presence at the gate.  Infant staff are now releasing pupils to their parents on the infant playground at the end of the day.  From now on if any parents of junior children wish to, they may walk up to school and wait on the junior playground.  The bell goes at 3.25 and we would ask you not to enter the playground until 3.20 so that we can make sure any games lesson are over.

*** Stars of the Week ***

Our Stars of the Week on Friday 7th March are:-

Vicki Bannister, Fiona Davis, Stevie Dodd, David Farnsworth, Ryan Foster, Abbi Groves, Elli Groves, Sam Hollis, Leah Smith and Ben Tennant.

Choir

The choir represented the school magnificently at Symphony Hall on Sunday by singing in the “Staffordshire Sings” event run by Staffordshire Performing Arts. Six hundred pupils took part and performed to a packed auditorium.  The children were amazed by the size of the venue but still managed to “sing their hearts out”.  Well done Choir!  Pictures have now been added to our website with a link from the 'MUSIC' page.
