Year 3-4

Roman Banquet

As a finale to our Roman topic in History we had a big Roman Banquet for all our young ‘friends, Romans and countrymen’.  Everyone dressed in togas which caused a lot of amusement and the use of initiative as the children tried to keep their togas on with various brooches, safety pins and ropes.  They also wore laurel wreaths which they had made earlier that morning and sandals.  They particularly enjoyed being served by some humble servants (their teachers!!).  They all brought in a selection of food that would have been around in the Roman times including olives, grapes and other fruit, cold meats, different types of cheese and bread.  Of course the children were also allowed to bring in modern day party food as it was a celebration.

The entertainment continued after the banquet with some Roman dancing and various party games including passing a balloon between their legs to the rest of their team.  This caused many problems with their long togas and they all appreciated how lucky they were not to have to wear togas every day!  Many prizes were won and it was a very enjoyable afternoon for both children and teachers.
