What is the Early Years Foundation stage Unit?

In September 2009 the Early Years at Whittington underwent many very exciting changes. The Nursery and Reception classes were combined to create an Early Years Foundation Stage Unit. This is a very exciting time and we are extremely confident that these changes will make the education offered in the early years at Whittington outstanding.

Why did we create an Early Years Foundation Stage Unit?

All children aged 0-5 years work from the same Early Years curriculum. By combining the two groups we aim to ensure that the essential qualities of Nursery practice will continue right through until the transition to year 1. Our aim is to create a play based emotionally and physically secure environment where Nursery and Reception aged children would be totally integrated and would not have to experience another move until the start of year 1.  By creating the unit we also have a better ratio of staff to children. The guidelines state that the ratio for reception aged children is 1:30. We are able to provide 1:12. A large amount of money has also been spent of creating the unit. Three classrooms have been knocked into one to provide a huge learning environment which will benefit the children. From 2010 we will be required to provide flexible hours for Nursery aged children. By setting up the Unit we will be more prepared to offer these flexible hours to you should you require them.
