History
History is regarded as an enjoyable and positive experience by the children of Whittington. This National Curriculum is followed for an overview of learning skill and programmes of study but is adopted to suit our particular ethos and benefits our locality has to offer.
We use the widest range of teaching styles to keep the subject alive and children record their ideas and experiences in an exciting, stimulating and varied ways.
We use cross-curricular links, particularly with Literacy and Geography and find ICT valuable for examining old documents, records and artefacts and for personal research.
We have a rich local environment and local history is a strong feature of our work. The ancient city of Lichfield is nearby with its medieval cathedral, Civil War association and Georgian culture all of which are utilized. The village provides a good and accessible learning experience, which provides a good and accessible learning experience throughout the school, both as settlements and social history. Y2/1 won a Local History study of the local village church. We made good use of visiting experts and connections with the barracks and its museum. There are close community links and also had visitors who explained about life in the past in the village. For example everyday life Y4/3, Church in Y2/1 and World War II in Yr 6/5.
Children enjoy history and have positive views of their ability and are excited by the topics covered.
