PLAY BUDDIES

All the children in Year 6 are given the opportunity to apply for the positions. We held meetings with the year 6 children and explained what being a “play buddy” would entail. Through a series of sessions with the buddies, we came up with a “play buddies” contract. The buddies stated their aims as a buddy, what their expectations were, what rules needed to be followed and what we as a school would do to support them. Teachers and buddies signed the contracts and in a special assembly all the buddies received their special “yellow caps” and a certificate.

The buddies work in the junior and infant playgrounds, helping the children to play together, helping if they are injured or upset, by taking them to the Dinner Supervisor, talking and introducing children to others and organising games. They all have a set of playground games and we are also introducing more playground equipment, so that children can have more fun at play times.

The buddies also help in classes on “wet play” days. Helping children to play together nicely with the wet play games. The buddies also sit in the dinner hall talking to the younger children and creating good positive role models for them.
