  • K2M - Year 3 Music lessons

    Published 25/04/22

The Year 3s enjoy taking part in their weekly K2M (The Key to Music) lesson.  Following on from a very successful first term of learning, the children are really getting to grips with their instruments- violins, violas and cellos.

The first term was spent learning how to look after and care for the instruments, learning about the different sounds they can make, both plucking and bowing. They learnt to play simple songs and accompaniments and recorded a short performance which they shared with other classes.

This term they have been continuing to develop their bowing skills, focusing on the different note lengths and looking at how music is written down in notation. In addition, the children have started using their left-hand fingers to make more new notes. They have also been exploring some different sound effects on their instruments and learning the Italian words which go with them. They have enjoyed listening to music from around the world which uses these sound effects to help paint a musical picture for example, ‘Sort Ride in a Fast Machine’ by John Adams.  On the last week of this term, the children will get to perform in front of an audience as their parents have been invited to come and watch them perform along with the year 4s.

A Day at Whittington Primary School Nursery

In the morning, I am greeted by my teachers and friends. I put away my belongings and enjoy my wake up shake up exercises. Next, I sit down to say good morning to everyone. We sing our special days of the week song and the teachers show us a timetable so I know what I am doing during the day. Then the teacher reads a story or talks to us about our topic! This makes me excited and curious.

The magic happens when we have free-choosing time inside and outside. I become an artist, an explorer, an inventor, a chef, a builder; I become anyone I wish to be; actively learning through meaningful and rich play experiences. Our classroom and Early Years gardens are set up so that I can access resources that motivate, challenge and inspire me. I am full of awe and wonder; I can lead my own learning, while getting support from my teachers when I need it.

Before lunchtime we do phonics and learn new letter sounds. We sing lots of nursery rhymes and songs too! At lunchtime I sit in the hall with my friends and eat my dinner, then I go for a play in the playground.

In the afternoon, we do some yoga or mindfulness exercises. We then do some Maths and sing different counting songs. After free-choosing time, we get cosy and listen to a lovely story. We then reflect on the day and think about all of the wonderful things we have learnt.

  • Tea with Me

    Published 19/01/22

Within school, it is really important that we find the time to listen to the children and ‘Tea with Me’ enables me to create a supportive and welcoming space where pupils are championed and empowered to speak their mind and voice their opinions about their education.

‘Tea with Me’ takes place on a Friday afternoon. Each week a group of children are chosen to come and share a cup of tea (or a hot chocolate) and a biscuit with me. We discuss a range of school issues including behaviour, teaching and learning, after school clubs, uniform and subject specific discussions. The children are very open and honest and share their thoughts and opinions freely. This gives me a greater understanding of school life from their perspective which will then feed into discussions at our Senior Leadership meetings on school improvement.
