Mental Health and Well-being

At Whittington, we fully understand that it is only when a child is healthy and happy will they be able to learn and be successful. The school educates the pupils on the importance of looking after their well-being and utilises various strategies to support pupils who are experiencing high levels of psychological stress, or who are at risk of developing SEMH problems, including:

  • Teaching about mental health and wellbeing through curriculum subjects such as:
    • PSHE
    • RSHE
  • Positive classroom management
  • Developing pupils’ social skills
  • Working with parents
  • Peer support – play buddies
  • Meet and greets (for pupils who find coming in to school more challenging)
  • Lunch club (for pupils who find lunch times tricky or need additional emotional support)
  • Well-being week - where pupils get to learn a range of strategies beyond the curriculum that can support them with their mental well-being.

The school’s Relationship and Behaviour procedure includes measures to prevent and tackle bullying, and contains an individualised, graduated response when behaviour may be the result of mental health needs or other vulnerabilities.

There are times when a child or family needs additional support. Below are some of the services we have accessed in the past.

WHAT IS CAMHS

CAMHS stands for Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services. Lichfield CAMHS are an NHS service that provide specialist mental health support up to the age of 18 to the population of Lichfield and Burntwood. We are a multidisciplinary team which means that we have professionals of different backgrounds, working together and this allows us to offer a range of therapeutic interventions. We work in collaboration with several other local agencies who also provide support locally to young people who are struggling with their emotions, relationships, personal development or their behaviour.
